I get asked all the time how I broke into copywriting. But honestly, it’s not some grand story about how I pulled myself up by my bootstraps and became self-taught.
In reality, I took the “lazy” way out and bought an online course that showed me step-by-step how to build a successful copywriting career from the ground up.

Here’s a month-by-month timeline of my copywriting journey since purchasing the course (Dec. 2018 to Oct. 2023 — almost 5 whole years!).
For reference, I was making around $2,700 a month ($32k a year) in my old full-time job. Even in 2019, I was blown away that I was able to make $38k (more than my old salary) in just 10 months of freelancing.
Now that I’ve been copywriting full-time for almost five years now, I still can’t believe I’m making over 4x what I was making back then.
This means that, on average, I earn in 3 months of copywriting what I used to earn in an entire year of working as an academic advisor. 🤯

Pros: Write Your Way To Freedom
Here are my favorite parts about Write Your Way To Freedom.
- The course is comprehensive. It doesn’t just teach you how to write good copy. It walks you through everything you need to do to start and run a successful copywriting business. I’ve taken other copywriting courses, and this is by far the most comprehensive.
- The course is perfectly structured. Each module builds off the last. This prevents overwhelm and allows you to move through the course one step at a time. This was perfect for me because I was able to block out all the other copywriting info out there and focus on one task at a time. (I’m a chronic over-researcher.)
- The Write Your Way to Freedom Circle community. The community behind this course is invaluable! Everyone is so nice and supportive. No matter what issues I’m having, I know I can post in the group and people will share their insight.
I’ve also met some of my closest IRL friends inside the Write Your Way to Freedom community. They’ve really stretched my belief of what’s possible as a business owner and I credit a lot of my success to those friendships.
Bonus: Sarah’s also super active in the group. She’s like a one-on-one mentor to everyone.
- Weekly live Q&As. Have a question? Submit it to Sarah and she’ll answer it during our weekly Live Q&A meetings. This is also anonymous, so you don’t have to feel put on the spot for not knowing something.
- “Student Of The Month” spotlights. Once a month, Sarah interviews a successful student in our group. It’s our chance to hear their story, see how they’re doing so far, and ask them questions. Cons: Write Your Way To Freedom
The only con is the price.
At first, I was reluctant to buy the course (just like you are right now). But then I began looking at it as an investment in my career.
Before buying WYW2F, I’d just dropped $18k on grad school and it landed me an entry-level job making $15 an hour. (Whomp, whomp.)
I was sooo desperate to create a better life for myself. So I changed my mindset and began viewing the course as an investment in my future career. After that, I was more than willing to pay full price for WYW2F.

Yes, copywriting will survive AI. And yes, starting a copywriting business in 2023 is still worth it, despite AI.
In fact, I’ve had THREE ~$20k months this year, largely because I’ve been able to leverage AI to write faster and better than I ever have before.
I’m also enjoying my work SO MUCH MORE because I can use AI to do the not-so-fun parts like generating article outlines and coming up with a list of topics to pitch to a client.
I get it — the last thing you want to do is invest your money and energy into something only for it to be a waste of time. But truthfully? I’m not too worried about AI taking my job — and you shouldn’t either.

Did your copywriting business slow down when COVID hit?
Thankfully, no. I actually got busier when COVID hit because my clients needed to send their customers more information on how they were handling the coronavirus pandemic.
Some of my clients (in the financial services niche) even saw their businesses grow in 2020 as more people reached out to them for help on what to do next. This meant they needed even more help (from me 😏) creating timely and helpful resources for their audience.

What were you feeling when you bought the course?
I was sooooo nervous about buying this course.
Was it a scam? Did I have the guts to stick with it? Was it worth the price? What would my family say?
This is a small list of doubts and emotions that were floating around in my head. And let me guess… they’re floating around in your head too, right? Every day I doubted whether I’d be successful, but I stuck with it despite my feelings. And now the course has paid for itself more than 16x.

Technically, no. You can read all the articles and do all the trial and error yourself to become a copywriter.

No, no, no. I promise this course is legitimate.
In fact, Sarah is such a copywriting pro that she was recently hired by Meta (read: Mark Zuckerberg) to teach his writers effective copywriting techniques.
Sarah is also the queen of over-delivering. Once you’re inside the course, you have every piece of information and support you need to build a successful and lucrative freelancing career.
It’s not like other programs where you pay a low amount, and then find out you need to buy 10 other products to get all the information you need.
You don’t need to buy anything else to make it work. So while it may feel like a big investment, it’s a one-time cost.
How long did it take you to move through the course?
Everyone moves at their own pace (so take my situation with a grain of salt).
It took me about two months to go through the first few course modules, create my website, and write three portfolio pieces. Once I began cold emailing, I was able to replace my full-time salary within 3 months.

Do you feel like cold emailing works?
Yes, cold emailing works! I got my first client within a week of cold emailing.
It seems daunting and nerve-racking at first, but those feelings quickly dissipate as you begin emailing more and more people. Sarah says you usually get about one client for every 20 emails you send out, and I’ve found this to be true.
How soon were you able to quit your full-time job?
I quit my job in March 2019 when I got my first retainer client (meaning I write several articles for her every month).
The only reason I was able to do this so soon was because I had an emergency fund in place. That allowed me to quit my job early so I could completely dive into growing my business.
But there are several people in the group who are growing their business while working full-time. Some don’t even intend to quit their job — they want to write as a side hustle.
The cool thing about the WYW2F community is that everyone comes from different walks of life. We all have different goals and have found success in different ways. The course allows you to define success on your terms.

Do you need writing experience before joining the course?
No! As long as you know basic sentence structure, you’re good. The course teaches you how to write in a conversational tone, which is worth the investment itself.
Before Write Your Way To Freedom, my writing was boring as heck! Coming from academia, I only knew how to write in long, way-to-complicated sentences. Thankfully, this course changed all that.

Do you feel like copywriting is what you’ll do for the rest of your career?
Now that I’m my own boss, I don’t see myself ever going back. The freedom and flexibility that come with being a copywriter is something I enjoy way more than I ever thought.
It’s also nice to know that I never have to ask for a raise. If I don’t like my monthly salary, I can find ways to increase it on my own (i.e. raising my rates, writing more efficiently so I can take on more clients, etc.).
I like being in control of my own destiny.
That said, now that I’ve been copywriting for five years, I’ve begun to weave other passions into my business. One of those passions is helping other freelancers with their finances. I’ve got loads of finance resources for freelancers, so if having an unpredictable income feels scary, take a peek.
